When you fix the strap for the baby tag onto both mother and new born infant the tags automatically synchronise with each other within 60 seconds and they then become a pair. For cases of multiple births the same procedure also applies. Once the baby tags are synchronised, if the mother tag sees any other tag or becomes separated from its paired tag then an alarm sounds both on the mother tag and also the administration system. Likewise if any strap gets tampered with or cut then this also alarms the system.
Some hospitals only choose to protect the baby and not necessarily protect the mother. The system still works in the same way.

When a mother and new born are ready to leave hospital, a member of staff notifies the administration system, which then lets a member of staff remove the tags. The mother and baby tags then lie dormant until reactivated and re assigned by fixing a new strap to a new mother and child.
Each tag is very lightweight weighing no more that 10 grams and each tag contains all the relevant electronics and battery. The tag is designed to have a smooth finish, it is water resistant and hypoallergenic. The strap comes in rolls and they are cut to size to fit each mother and baby during the activation process of the tag. This system can also be adapted to elderly people or people who need extra care. The tag can be set to monitor each patient's movement, thus preventing any patients getting access to areas they shouldn't.
How the Baby Tag works
Providing you have a Windows XP compatible server host PC (which normally gets sited in the nurses administration office) this then monitors and controls the whole system. Providing this is in place it can then also be networked to other locations providing additional applications and capabilities.
The Baby Tag readers are installed at specified exit / entry points throughout the area to be protected. These individual readers relay the tag signals within a 30m range to the host PC. In the event of an alarm the PC automatically triggers various SMS text messages, email alerts and alarms. When an alarm happens it can automatically trigger any CCTV systems set up as an alarm, and also trigger any door locks.
The Baby Tag software on the host PC will display a current list of all baby tags currently live on any mother and new born, it can also give a list of any alarms listing which tag was activated and what time the event happened. The system will also keep a history. Levels of detection can be adjusted and any authorised administrator can call up any data requested.
In addition to using the Baby Tag on mothers and babies, it can also be adapted to protect expensive and valuable equipment. The tag gets applied in the same way and can be continuously monitored. If any equipment gets removed from a certain area security can be notified and act accordingly.
